Flying Foxes

These large bats are commonly known as flying foxes because of their dog-like faces. In the summer they “camp” together in large groups of males and females, usually in the rainforest or in mangrove forests; babies are born soon after the camps are formed. Some summer camps have been occupied for more than 80 years. In the winter the camps disband, as there is not enough food within a night’s flying distance to feed the entire population.
